The Ode to Joy is world famous and is performed around the world. The music has become part of nation states. The European National Anthem, News Years in Japan, when the Berlin wall came down and has become the global musical symbol for world peace and equality.

Yet this master piece was almost never completed. It was the tail end of Beethoven's life when the composer mustered the strength to finish the score. But why such great struggles? What was so inherent in this creation that drove Beethoven to chase the elusive melody for over two decades?
